CAPITOLA >> It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Capitola Village where merchants are kicking off their first window display contest. Voting will be 1-5 p.m. Saturday during the inaugural Holiday Open House, concluding with the tree lighting at 5:30 p.m.
There will be drawings every half hour for $2,500 in gift certificates, and those voting on the shop windows will be entered into the 5 p.m. grand prize drawing.
The new event combines caroling and the tree lighting, evening activities scheduled separately in the past, and offers more family-oriented fun, such as face painting and ornament-making inside the Mercantile and a visiting Christmas Fairy. The Soquel High Jazz Singers and the New Brighton Middle School Band will provide music.
“Night times are hard for a lot of people,” said Craft Gallery owner Carin Hanna, explaining the change in festivities.
