Santa Cruz’s Luke Rockhold was slated to compete in a five-round bout at UFC Fight Night 55 on Friday night in Australia. The 185-pounder Soquel High alum only needed two rounds to make his statement — that he deserves a shot at the middleweight title.
Rockhold defeated Britain’s Michael Bisping by submission at :57 of the Round 2 in the co-main event at Allphones Arena in Sydney.
Rockhold, a former Strikeforce champion who was coming off back-to-back finishes of Costas Philippou and Tim Boetsch, got off to a quick start on his feet. He landed a number of kicks to the head and midsection and continued to shine when the fight went to the mat.
In the Round 2, Rockhold landed a right hand as Bisping rushed in and added a straight left counter. After using a right whip kick. Rockhold switched legs and blasted Bisping up top with a left head-kick, flooring Bisping.
Rockhold jumped on top and after a brief scramble, locked Bisping up in a bout-ending guillotine.
